Bite Appliances for Sports Explained by Warren Dentist
I’m Dr. Greg Apsey, here in Warren Michigan, here at 586 573 7700 and I’d like to talk today about protecting your children’s teeth during sporting activities. It is critically important that your child wears some sort of mouth protection while playing heavy contact sports. The type of appliance can vary. It can be custom made appliance, made here in the office, where we would make impressions of the teeth, and have an appliance that’s fit, and would probably be the least bulky of the appliances that you would have your child wear and probably the most comfortable and easiest to wear. The cost is around $150 for custom made mouth guard, and, of course, this is what I would recommend. If your child has braces and their teeth are actively being moved, that sort of appliance or any sort of appliance that’s boiled and then placed is not going to allow the teeth to move. So we recommend that you wear a looser fitting appliance. We do have those in our office and we recommend them for all of our children who are in braces and who are active in sports.
If the child is not in braces and it’s not affordable to have an appliance made in the office, they are available over the counter and these are the boil and bite appliances, they are effective. But above all, it’s important, it’s best to prevent a problem rather than having to treat a problem after it’s occurred. So try to promote the idea of protection of the teeth. And hopefully your child will agree to wear it. Thanks for listening.
